Who we are

Its goals and objectives include:
Unifying the Filipino-Americans with ancestral roots from the Province of Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines, now residing in Illinois and elsewhere in the U.S.A. and to foster friendship and cooperation among them;
To provide moral support and spiritual assistance to all members whenever necessary and feasible; and,
To organize and/or participate in community development through charitable programs to assist in educational and religious advancement.
The History of the Zamboanga del Norte Association of Illinois
The association also adapted its branding, evolving from ZAMBO NORTH to ZAMNAI in 2007, to align more closely with other Zamboanga del Norte associations across the United States. This change marked a new era for the organization, further embedding itself in the cultural and community landscape.
In 2018, ZAMNAI achieved a significant milestone by obtaining federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. This accomplishment, a culmination of extensive collaborative efforts, allowed the association to operate as a recognized charitable organization, facilitating tax-deductible donations to support its mission.
Today, ZAMNAI continues to flourish, celebrating cultural traditions through annual summer festivals such as Hudyaka sa Chicago, Miss Hudyaka, Gawad Parangal, and various Christmas gatherings. Committed to serving its members, ZAMNAI has successfully launched its flagship initiative, the Helping Hands Program, which provides health assistance and burial benefit to those who qualify. The organization’s resilience and growth reflect the dedication and teamwork of its members over the years. As it evolves, the administration has established two key committees aimed at enhancing the member experience. The Committee on Members Welfare focuses on planning initiatives and networking with community partners to ensure members have access to government and community programs. Meanwhile, the Youth and New Generation Committee prepares the organization for the future by mentoring young leaders who will uphold its legacy. With a rich history and a strong commitment to community service, ZAMNAI looks forward to further enriching the lives of its members and giving back to Zamboanga del Norte.
As we reflect on our journey, we remain focused on our mission to support one another and celebrate our heritage. We invite all ZaNortehanons to continue this legacy of unity and service.
The Zamboanga del Norte Association of Illinois, known as ZAMNAI, was founded over three decades ago by Berisimo Refugio and a dedicated group of Filipino-American professionals from Zamboanga del Norte. Established in May 1989, ZAMNAI aimed to unite members of the Zamboanga del Norte community in Illinois, fostering mutual understanding and promoting the cultural heritage that binds us together.
The inaugural meeting took place in a modest apartment in Chicago, attended by fewer than twenty individuals. From this gathering emerged the association’s first set of officers, who set forth the mission to enhance the welfare of its members and preserve their cultural identity.
By August of the same year, ZAMNAI organized its first family picnic, emphasizing community bonding through shared experiences, including outdoor masses celebrated by local clergy. This spirit of unity continued with annual Christmas parties and various social events, enhancing the cultural ties among members.
In 1990, the association introduced its newsletter, ZYPHER, to serve as a communication platform for its members, though it was short-lived. The following years saw a consistent increase in membership and active participation in the broader Filipino-American community. ZAMNAI was officially registered as a civic organization in Illinois and engaged in numerous social, civic, and religious activities.
The association launched its first charitable project, “TABANG,” aimed at supporting the Zamboanga del Norte Emergency Hospital. This initiative demonstrated ZAMNAI’s commitment to giving back to the community and provided a framework for future charitable endeavors.
As the years progressed, ZAMNAI underwent leadership changes in accordance with its constitutional mandate for biennial elections.
